Try academics with multiple PHD’s and still manage to click on them and when
reading the email the use of English language is so bad the academic should be
shot for falling for the phishing.

We get a lot of those crazy e-mail’s in our e-mail’s at work, and what’s so
strange, is I work for the city, so you’d think that someone who works for the
city would have the sense not to open one of those, but no luck. I got one
looking like it was from someone I’d never even met in our building in the form
of a reply message, telling me “do not delete any of your e-mail’s,” and
something about me having used such and such amount of my mailbox, and to
validate my mailbox click the following link, and was actually signed “your
system administrator,” which was probably what caused whoever clicked it before
to click it, and apparently it spread to everybody else on the network, sense I
asked a co-worker about it, and she told me it was a virus that would spread to
everybody’s addressbook if you clicked the link, and something told me not to
click the link, especially sense it didn’t have my name on it.

Hi Donna,

Yeah there is somewhere in the phishing scam a file that runs and picks up your
contacts list from yor account,

It has some tye up in to google docks I believe.

Crazy thing is that an off shoot of this has taken our work place enterprise
email system down a couple of times ove rthe past 2 days due to people clicking
the link in the email.

Only 4 out of 5 plus thousand isn’t bad but still makes a mess to then have to
clean up.

Yes, and it looks like the email is coming from the sender. In my case, the
email came from a colleague, so appeared quite credible.
Cheers,
Donna

Do they give the sender’s name, as in, “Sharon Hooley has shared a document
with you”? If not, that’s definitely a tell-tale sign. Thanks for the warning.

Hi all,

I just wanted to pass this along, since I know there are many gmail users on
list. I actually got one of these yesterday - it's for real.

Cheers,
Donna

A new malware threat has been spreading rapidly over the past 24 hours with
several instances of the threat reported to CSIT staff. This particular threat
is a sophisticated phishing scam leveraging Gmail contacts to replicate itself.

The threat presents itself as an email message notifying the recipient that a
Google Docs document has been shared with them. The message appears to come
from a contact known to the recipient and includes a link to the shared
document. If message recipient clicks on the link, they are taken to a web
page disquised as the Google logon page where any credential they enter are
collected.

Once Google credentials have been collected the malware uses those credentials
to access the contacts and mailbox in order to replicate the original malicious
mailing yet again. Hence the rapid spread of the threat.

Google has taken actions to mitigate the threat - such as taking down
fraudulent web pages and blocking compromised Gmail accounts. Nevertheless,
Google users have been warned against reflexively clicking on links to shared
documents regardless the apparent source.
