Could this be what you need to do?
• bullet If you're using FileVault in Mac OS X Snow Leopard, you can upgrade to
FileVault 2 by upgrading to OS X Lion or later. After upgrading OS X, open
FileVault preferences and follow the onscreen instructions to upgrade
FileVault. group with 2 items.
If this system was running the older version or was migrated from an older
system and you never did this then you might be running File Vault 1.
