Ok so whom ever you spoke with at Vodafone was smoking copious amounts of crack.

Let’s dig in to the statements they made. First, 5G is no where near even
being ratified by the standards boards let alone in production anywhere. When
we speak of 5G we’re talking 2020 or later time frames with early signs of it
appearing over the next few years. Just like HSPA+ transitioned us from 3 to
4g it’s likely LTE will extend out for a long time bridging the gap. So,
there’s no way the iPhone 8 or Samsung S8 are going to have 5G anything
attached.
Next, LTE-U is a part of a 5G strategy. The more bandwidth you want
the higher the frequency. It’s literally bandwidth that’s important in terms
of the possible data carried. So when we talk about LTE-U this gives us 5 GHZ
spectrum to work with which as WiFi users know can get you in to the gigabit
range. So you can bind a channel or 2 up on the 5 GHz band and you’re off to
the races at gigabit speed. This will be mixed in with other technologies to
get us to 5G but it’s still not 5G.
When real 5G comes to be it will probably be in the millimeter wave
range and we should see north of 10 gigabit or 10gig speeds.

So you see your no where near 5G not even with the big infrastructure spend you
folks in NZ are undertaking.
