Off the top of my head, I'd suggest a simple version of what you already have here. Capture just the arrow keys, enter, escape, and so on, and play sounds as necessary. Actually, Core Audio can play sounds, and the window itself can catch keys, so you wouldn't need a scene at all. A simple audio menu class could do it, I would think.
