Nothing. Once you set up the drive for TM to backup to, its automatic. If you add TM to menu extras, you can easily check when it last ran.

   Time Machine does this. I also use Carbon Copy Cloner 5. It too will do 
incremental backups. It offers a scheduling option as well which I will set up 
later. CCC is not the easiest application to navigate but once you have created 
tasks and set the scheduling options, its pretty much hands off.

So, I am finally doing backups on my mac.  right now, I am using time machine.
I know there are other solutions out there, and am wanting feedback about them. 
 What I eventually want is for the back up solution to do a backup, then only 
update the backup when new things happen or are added.  Is there something out 
there to do this?  Can time machine do this?
