Hi,

First, if you're subscribed to Apple Music or iTunes Match, music that is not
purchased from iTunes, will be searched for in the Apple iTunes huge library in
an effort to give you a iTunes quality version of the song title. If it is not
available in the iTunes Store, then it is simply uploaded to Apple's servers
for use on all your devices. You do not lose anything from those sorts of
titles. Apple also does not appear to care where that music came from, if it
does not match anything in their library, it's yours to do with whatever you
wish. The problems arise when you use Apple Music and it does match a ripped
song title with an iTunes version. What seems to happen is that it upgrades
the title to the Apple Music version, which is fine, but if you ever stop your
Apple Music subscription, then those titles are no longer accessible. The
workaround is to keep a copy of those titles on a separate drive somewhere just
in case you do stop your subscription. The iTunes Match subscription does the
same sort of thing, in the sense that it will give you the iTunes high quality
version, but it does not have the same DRM restrictions, so if you were to stop
the iTunes Match subscription, you get to keep the newer high quality version
of the song title without any issues. I guess that it's entirely possible that
Apple Music has modified things so that you don't necessarily lose your titles,
but I haven't heard of that myself.

Now moving on to your original issue. it sounds like there are devices or
software on your Mac that are either dedicating ports or messing with
configuration in some manner. There's no real logical reason for your keyboard
to stop working when an iPhone is connected unless the iPhone is being
identified as some other kind of device instead. I'm certainly not saying that
it isn't happening, just that there's no logical reason. I wonder if you have
an external keyboard you could connect that would be usable when the internal
keyboard is being uncooperative? Either Bluetooth or USB would do.

Later...

Let me add some more information. I avoided joining Apple Music because I have
some content on my computer that is not commercially released and I was given
to understand that joining Apple Music might erase that kind of private content
from my library if AM couldn't match it. I just read a new article about
turning on iCloud Music Library that said something about having the choice to
merge your content on your devices with Apple Music. This sounds like it
should prevent the erasure of private, noncommercial recordings. but don't
want to screw with it right now. In any event, still don't know how to
change the settings related to my iPhone in iTunes on my Mac because, when the
phone is connected, the QWERTY keyboard is toast. Further, even with my
Trackpad, which does work in all cases, I can't see how to get to the devices
tab in a way where I could make these changes anyway.
