Some swear by them, others not so much. I'm in the "not so much" category. If things are running normally in the earlier OS, then I would say that the clean install is unnecessary. If you're experiencing problems, then by all means a clean install may fix some of those issues. One of the problems that I find with people doing clean installs, is that they don't really do a true clean install. The true clean install requires you to reinstall all apps, reconfigure all network settings, re-create user accounts etc. Using any migration tools negates the possible benefits of the clean install. I've not performed a clean install since probably 10.5 or so which includes computer changes, HD to SSD changes etc. All runs smooth as silk as far as I can tell. Later...
