Try the oposite way.  Connect your devices then connect the connector in to 
your iphone.  In the strictest sense, honestly, it should not matter which way 
you do it.  Based on your description, sounds to me like you did it right:  
however, just make sure that the connectors really snap in place on the duo 
connector.  I’d say that it appears you may have a bad unit though.
