To me, a clean install is doing it all from scratch. Running a backup is
always a good idea. The only data I restored was documents, media, and the
Windows VM. I also downloaded most of the apps ahead of time and put them on an
external drive.
Create the installer on a USB stick. When you boot from it you will have all
the tools including disk utilities.
