rsync is a Unix tool used to keep two partitions in sync. It is generally set up between too different computers. It will get checksums or date stamps of each file and only copy files that have changed. While this is a usable system, I think it is a bit outdated. Probably your best best is to get a enclosure that can contain several disk drives and automatically creates a raid between those drives. If one drive fails, than you will get a warning, you pull out the bad drive and drop in a new one of the same or larger size, and the enclosure will automatically put the new disk into the raid cluster. Personally I only really deal with text based source code and documentation so my disk requirements are quite small. If you want to ensure a complete solution the Take Control of Backing Up Your Mac” book by Joe Kissell is quite good and is probably available at Book Share.
