Not sure of title. I don't watch being a total. Do the copy for wife.
When she gets back, I will ask.

Really? What title? I'm going to have to try it again. Maybe the
loophole is back. I don't care so much about burning copies but I
would like to store movies on my computer to watch on trips or
whatever.

I don't know the details of how the DVD encryption works but the
end result is that your image will lack some key signature which
will prevent it from playing all the content. Otherwise, yes, no
special software would be needed. I think there was a bug a while
back where DiskUtility actually would allow you to image a DVD to
your hard drive and folks would do that to take movies on trips.
Running a movie from hard disk takes a lot less power than from
the DVD drive. I don't recall when that loophole got fixed but
last I tried it my DVD image wouldn't work beyond the initial menu
system.
Of course if you got it to work on a commercial DVD please say so.
That would be great news!

What does it matter if you are making an image of the media?

Sounds like your DVD had no encryption or DRM. This is unusual
for a commercial DVD but common for personal home videos and the
like.

Hi all,
When I want to copy a CD or DVD I place the media in the tray.
After the icon for the media shows up on the desktop I select
it and go to the file menu then arrow down to duplicate. I
click duplicate. A folder with the same name as the media will
be created. I remove the media from the tray. I place a blank
media in the tray. I place the focus on the folder that was
made by using duplicate. Next I go to the file menu and arrow
down to burn and click it. After the burning is completed I
have a working copy.
My question is why do we need special soft ware to copy CD's or
DVD's?
