I was playing with MacTheRipper but I don't really want to re-encode the video/audio. I just want to dump the DVD verbatim to my hard drive. I don't even care particularly if I can burn a copy from the files since that's not my intent. I've not heard of RipIt. They say they have verified that it works on over 250,000 DVDs. For $20 it might be worth it.

This is due to the several different anti-piracy methods used to
protect dvds and blu-ray discs.

You cannot tell if a disc has copyright protection until you try to
duplicate it or dump it to your HD.
I recommend "Rip It" which will create an entire disc copy and works
with 99% of discs. I think it costs $10
Also there is MacTheRipper currently at V3 soon to be V4 this app
gives you complete comtrol on what you want to extract from the movie.
ie subtitles, audio streams, movie only etc.

Hope this Helps clarify things

Hmm. Just tried it on UP from Pixar and it gave me an error when I went
to create the disk image (input/output error).

Not sure of title. I don't watch being a total. Do the copy for wife.
When she gets back, I will ask.

Really? What title? I'm going to have to try it again. Maybe the
loophole is back. I don't care so much about burning copies but I
would like to store movies on my computer to watch on trips or whatever.

Works on Netflicks.

I don't know the details of how the DVD encryption works but the
end result is that your image will lack some key signature which
will prevent it from playing all the content. Otherwise, yes, no
special software would be needed. I think there was a bug a while
back where DiskUtility actually would allow you to image a DVD to
your hard drive and folks would do that to take movies on trips.
Running a movie from hard disk takes a lot less power than from the
DVD drive. I don't recall when that loophole got fixed but last I
tried it my DVD image wouldn't work beyond the initial menu system.
Of course if you got it to work on a commercial DVD please say so.
That would be great news!

What does it matter if you are making an image of the media?

Sounds like your DVD had no encryption or DRM. This is unusual
for a commercial DVD but common for personal home videos and the
like.

Hi all,
When I want to copy a CD or DVD I place the media in the tray.
After the icon for the media shows up on the desktop I select it
and go to the file menu then arrow down to duplicate. I click
duplicate. A folder with the same name as the media will be
created. I remove the media from the tray. I place a blank media
in the tray. I place the focus on the folder that was made by
using duplicate. Next I go to the file menu and arrow down to
burn and click it. After the burning is completed I have a
working copy.
My question is why do we need special soft ware to copy CD's or
DVD's?
