No, not at all. I thought it might be hard to install, when I looked in the box, but it was actually really simple. I had the help of my 14 year old and we installed it ourselves. Basically, you take the thumb knob off the inside of the door and then attached the August lock. The app walks you through the setup process.
There is a bridge that you plug into a nearby outlet and there is another small device that you just stick near the latch of the door—this helps to identify whether the door is open or closed. I had some connection issues at first and their support staff were good over the telephone.
