Hi,

First, I will clarify that this collection of apps that you find in the App
Switcher does not actually use up resources. Only a few recently used apps
remain running in the background. The rest are handled by the iOS in a way
that removes the primary memory usage portion of the app and just leaves a
remnant for quicker startup. So, in fact, constantly clearing the App Switcher
actually negatively affect battery life as your iPhone has to use more
resources to start up the app than it would have had the app still been
available in the switcher.

All that being said, the gesture you're looking for is the swipe up gesture.
So, double-press the Home button to bring up the App Switcher, then swipe up on
the app that you want removed. You can even use multiple fingers to swipe up
and off multiple apps. Yes, it is often challenging teaching others when your
gestures are slightly, or completely, different than those of your sighted
companions. Mostly, for me, it's just a matter of a bit of research and a lot
of memory.

Hi everyone,

I really couldn’t think of a decent subject line for this question, so I’m
using the particular situation I’m dealing with. I’m totally blind, and my wife
who is not very “techy” is fully sighted. She’s just now getting into using her
new iPhone. As you know, whenever you tap on something, the app opens up
immediately, so eventually you have a whole bunch of stuff running that doesn’t
need to be. So one of the things I’m trying to show her is how to close these
open apps using the app switcher. The way I do it with VO is to double-tap
Home, flick right or left to the app I want to close, then swipe up with three
fingers. I know that you can also swipe up with one finger when you land on the
app and VO gives you the choice of Activate or close. What I cannot figure out
is how to do the same thing without VO running.

So now, more generally, I’d love to hear thoughts about how others of you are
in the same situation. By that I mean, the totally blind person teaching one
who can see. I really do want to show my wife how cool the iPhone really can be.

I hope this isn’t too crazy a topic. Thanks for any feedback!
