Hello Angus, There are several variables that could cause the issue you described.
However, off the top of my head, I would say this most likely has to do with the speed of your computer to the internet mail server. Give the mail app a little more time to close, say, an extra 20 seconds or so, the next time you quick the app, and see if that does not make a difference. Why in the default mail app, I do a CMD + Q to quit and mail stays open. So, I CMD + TAB back into mail and do a CMD + 1 for the general mailbox and mail finally closes.
