I don't play anything in iTunes. I use VLC media player for everything. here's how I do it. I rip the cd's using iTunes. I have found it to be the easiest way. then I go into where iTunes stores them and move them to another folder on my Mac. to do this on the Mac, go into music/iTunes/iTunesmedia/music. whatever you've ripped will be in there. you can select them and move them somewhere else. if you want them on your phone you'll need to put them there before you remove them. come to think of it, I'm not sure you can have them on your phone if they're not in iTunes. maybe somebody else can weigh in on this.
