Hi, Lorrie, Thanks for this. I didn't know VLC was even still available. I thought it went away a couple of years ago.
Obviously I don't have VLC, but I forgot that I'd downloaded hand brake back in September. I think I'll try importing the files using that, and then maybe I can play them in Quicktime, thus avoiding having them included in my iTunes library.
