FYI - Some email providers, such as Gmail, for example, require that you login to your email account via the web, and go into your mail settings and turn on either POP or IMAP access. I am pretty sure that Gmail only lets you choose one or the other to be active at any given time.
Once you made your choice, when you create an account in your email client, the account will be either one or the other.
