Jonathan, I finally gave up with TextEdit.What I ended up doing is this; Opened the text file in pages. The symbols all converted to their proper characters (“, 1/4, 1/2). I then exported as a text file. Opened in text edit again, and all is well.
I could not find any way to change the characters by using the Option an selecting alternate encodings, so not sure exactly what these choices do. Thanks for trying, in any case.
