Ummm, Brad, that’s not always correct, It will depend on who and how your mail is currently setup / hosted,
If you wish to change an existing account from pop3 to an imap account then your mail may remain on the mail server of your host in which case the swap to imap will change how you are connected to that mail host and therefore you should still have your mail showing or at least some of your mail depending on what you have your setup configured for. You should also be able to archive your existing mail through your mail client into a storage archive such as a psT file from outlook or I’m sure apple mail has an equivalent option and then setup your new mail connection using imap and then import your archive in to the new setup to have your older mail showing in your existing account. If you can’t do this from your mail client then I’d find a new mail client.
