Hi Tim and Petrus,

Apple do a similar thing with their mail app on the phone and Microsoft have
what they call the focused in box which is everything in your mail boxes but
it’s simply just a label / shortcut to the messages in the in boxes.

Hi Petrus,

Leave well enough alone. As I mentioned, these aren't really folders, they are
labels.. Thus, yes, if you delete something from the All Mail folder, it will
delete it from everywhere. It's not using up any extra space. Think of it
like a database. The All Mail is the master list, and things like InBox,
Deleted, and any labels/folders that you've created yourself are just markers
that allow them to have more specific locations for your own purposes. The
Photos app and iTunes/Music do the same sort of thing. That is, for example,
in iTunes/Music, your library includes all your music, but your playlists are
simply organizational for you. They do not create multiple copies of the music
to have them in different playlists.

HTH.

So if I was to delete all of the messages in my All mail folder, would this
delete them from the rest of my labeled folders? I have over 500 unread
messages in my All Mail folder and thousands of read messages. I have folders
created for any important emails I wish to keep so don’t see why I need to keep
everything I’ve ever received in my All Mail folder. But if it’s going to cause
problems if I delete them all I’ll just leave well enough alone.

Hi Patrick,

Google likes to do things a little different than most. The things we know as
mailboxes in most iMap mail accounts like iCloud and other services are known
as labels in Google. this is not just a semantic difference, but is just the
way Google does things. Apple Mail and other mail clients do some fancy coding
to make Google's version of iMap work well within their environment. Now,
keeping this in mind, the All Mail label in Google is a collection of all your
mail. Whether it's also a part of other labels like InBox, Deleted Messages,
Important, or anything that you may have created yourself, all messages that
you receive are always a part of All Mail as well as being a part of the other
mailbox, or mailboxes. So, if you had some messages in your Google InBox at
the top of your list as you mentioned, and if you accidentally deleted them,
they would be removed from the InBox, be assigned the Deleted Items label and
would remain within the All Mail labelled items. New messages should still be
labelled with the InBox label and thus show up under the Inbox, Google, mailbox
within Apple Mail. There are ways of configuring other labels to go to
specific locations, but I'm not aware of being able to reassign the InBox.

Hi TIm,
Thank you for your help.
I do have two account; google and iCloud.
The way I hear the mailbox list is this:
at the top, there is inbox, under this there is iCloud and then google; then
there is junk which under this has also iCloud and google; then there are the
archive boxes, then important and then all mail. Now, under the word inbox at
the top, there is google as i said, and this is where all the messages for my
google account were going.
But this morning, after hitting a key or two three messages in the box were
suddenly gone. And when I searched for them I found them first in archive, then
later strangely, in all mail. And now all the mail goes in this box.
I am trying to understand what you are saying, but I am new to the mac book air
so you are trying to guide me but I have little understanding so far. haha
thanks so much though.

Hi,

All Google mail goes to the All Mail label no matter what. That is the nature
of the Google eMail service structure. I suspect that you are simply focused
on the All Mail label/mailbox instead of the main InBox for your Google
account. Do you have multiple accounts in the Mail app? If not, then press
cmd-1 to bring focus to the InBox. If you do have multiple accounts, make sure
that the Mailbox list is visible by pressing cmd-shift-m. This command is a
toggle, so it will show/hide the Mailbox list. Once the Mailbox list is
visible, navigate to it, interact with it, and navigate to the InBox for your
Google account. All your Google account InBox messages should still reside
there.

HTH.

Hi,
THe default inbox in apple mail for google was the google inbox. But now,
somehow, all new mail arrives in the all mail box.
How do I get the google mail to use the google inbox once again?
Thanks.
