Thanks Robert.  That is helpful that they can also be m4a audio files.  
Purchased m4r files still would be a challenge to convert to m4a, but a 
unprotected m4r can be converted to an m4a simply by changing the extension 
from m4r to m4a.  It is one of the few places where simply changing the 
extension works without corrupting the file.
