Hi,

You should have no problems with access speed with an external, as long as you
maintain a backup you should be able to restore the library easily if the
external fails. Beyond that, if the library is huge just due to music, then
I'd suggest the iTunes Match feature. This can let you use Apple's Cloud to
backup your music and have access to it on any of your devices. A backup of
your content is still a good idea in this case, only because backups are always
a good idea. The iTunes Match service is $25 USD if you live in the US, a
little more in Canada, and probably a little more in other countries as well.

Later...

Hi,

My Music/itunes library’s growing & growing. I’d like to pick your brains as
to how to deal with it. Do I go an external drive way, or a very big SSD drive
on a new mac? I’m concerned that should I relocate my library onto an external
drive and it then develops a problem, I might lose everything? Also, does
having a large library on an external drive slow down the playback/quality?
And if external drive’s a solution, what drive? Pls be as generous in your
opinions as this list allows or else email offline.

thanks

Simon
