the way I do it is;
command option l, then it says clear.  Tab once and you get the downloads, tab 
once more and that’s where you find ou whether it has downloaded or not.
If it says stop then it is still downloading and if it says show in finder then 
it is finished.
If you VO right arrow to the right a few times it should tell you how much it 
it has downloaded so far.

Also, if you don’t want it to download to downloads, you can go to Safari and
command comma to preferences and change a lot of things and one of them is 
where you want to download to.
