The number you’re referring to is, I think, the Mac address of the modem. I don’t know whether it’s available anywhere other than on the printed label. You might need an iPhone app such as Seeing AI to read it, or if that fails, a local or remote source of human assistance.

When I set my cable modem up, I connected it directly to my Mac via a Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter, then used Safari to complete the initial setup process with the service provider via their Web application. I can’t remember the details, as it was more than five years ago.

I then connected the modem to my router. Of course, if you already have a cable Internet service, you probably won’t need the setup process. In my case, it was a new account.

Subject: Re: Now how about accessible modems

Tracy, I did just that several years back I bought a Motorola surfboard modem to replace the Comcast modem that I was renting. All that was required was to register the modem with Comcast by giving them the 16 or so digit number off the bottom of the modem. It’s not the serial number, but some other type like the I am E I number or something. Anyway once the modem was registered and I had signal I simply plugged in my Apple time machine router and I was often running no complications at all again once the modem was receiving signal it was a simple matter of plugging in any router to have Wi-Fi in the house. Not so complicated.

Speaking of accessible modems…

Does this mean you all have experience connecting the modem to your internet provider? Anytime I’ve googled this, it looks complicated. I’d love to stop renting our modem from Comcast.

Thanks,

Traci

Sorry about that Kliphn, Kliphn sounds a lot like Clifton to me, Especially when it goes by fast. I don’t usually go checking the spelling of familiar sounding names. Damn maybe I’m gonna have to go on a deaf list too.☺️

Actually, a single Eeros unit is both a Router and wifi access point.  The additional units serve as nodes, that provide additional access points to the wifi network.

You are correct, I did miss speak.  The eero is a router, that connects to your modem.  And the others act as an access point.  Sorry about that.

This is not correct.

An Eeros system is a combination Router and Wifi access point, that provides “mesh” wifi access.

A modem is a device, usually provided by your ISP, that connects your home network or individual computer to the ISPs internet service.

Eero is a modem, it becomes a router when you have more then one.  You can also get beacons to extend your signal threw out your home.  The main unit is called the gateway, the rest of them are your routers.  HTH

The thread on routers was great. But I think I’m going to need a better modem soon. I have a surfboard modem now and it’s nearing the end of it’s life. How about good accessible easy to use low Learning  curve modems?
