My personal solution to this problem is to buy a better device than I think I 
need, and then to make it last.

My late 2013-model MacBook Pro is just about reaching the limit now. 
It's one of the oldest systems that could be upgraded to Big Sur. I doubt that 
it will be compatible with the next major release. It's also giving very slow 
performance nowadays, as the latest software is more resource-intensive than 
the old versions were.

Of course, different people have different buying strategies.
