Hi,

When a battery is swollen, the contents within the battery are reacting in a
manner that is causing the battery to expand. If the process is left long
enough, the battery casing will give way and the contents will leak.
Sometimes, this is gradual, sometimes this is dramatic. Of course, the
contents of the battery are often corrosive and possibly toxic, so addressing
it before the leak or burst is preferred.

The difficulty with this age of MacBook Air is actually finding the battery.
When my son needed to replace the screen on his 2012 MacBook Pro in 2014, I was
able to find a replacement for less than $300. The same model of MacBook Pro
of a friend in 2017 was much more challenging to find a screen for. The best
price I could find was over $600. As computers get older, it is often
difficult to source parts, thus the price goes up. I also have a surplus 2012
MacBook Pro 15” that I use when testing in Catalina that needs a new battery.
Our parts people cannot source the battery anywhere. Other than the battery,
there’s nothing wrong with the MBP, but it’s battery only lasts about half an
hour now so is more of a desktop than a laptop.

Yes, going to the Apple Store, or any Apple Authorized Service Provider is
worth the try, but don’t be surprised if the battery is unavailable.

Later…
