Tim, Thank you for your patient response
I did get to recovery and tried to erase the hard drive and then reinstall from scratch. I think I may have messed things up since I got a message the start up disk couldn’t be verified. So I was stuck. I tried again to play around with volumes and finally reinstalled the OS but now I’m stuck on setting up home folder as the setup assistant insists my name is not acceptable and prompts me to choose another but to no avail. So I think I shall have to call apple support.
