I would try updating to macOS Catalina first, and then do the update to 
Monterey.
If you have a problem finding the Catalina installer, contact me off list, and 
I can get it to you.

comes up. I do that, and then it gets stuck on checking with (null), no 
percentage. No other windows seem to be open. I have tried shutting it down and 
starting over, I have removed the install icon from the Applications finder 
folder and re-downloaded the 12 GB size file, and I have connected and 
reconnected it to the WiFi. Still, no go. Do others have ideas of what else I 
may be able to try? I have not done any other kind of configuration or 
customization other than the standard Apple ID and one Gmail account on it, so 
if I need to erase it completely and start all over, no data will get lost.
