Well, two easy answers.
1. mp3 is just well integrated into the ecosphere with strong and often
default support in both software and devices for many platforms. Just
like Internet Explorer for some is the internet, mp3 for some is the
standard audio file. That's not a technical problem.
2. In some tests folks couldn't tell the difference between mp3 and
uncompressed (or lightly compressed lossy) formats. Actually, some found
the artifacts introduced by mp3 actually sounded better. Been a while
but if you google around you can probably turn up the articles on that.

Hi list,
Lyn and I were talking earlier, and we were wondering why people continue to
use MP3 files when there are lossless formats such as OGG? Some people are able
to hear the difference between something ripped at 320 kpbs and 160 kpbs for
example. My question is, why do people continue to use MP3s if they lose sound
quality? OGG is completely free and open source and much smaller than MP3.
