A restart is a quick and dirty fix. But learning and using keyboard
shortcuts is in many cases more efficient.
Pressing VO-n to focus on a notification, then pressing
VO-control-command-space brings up actions one of which is the Close button.

After ejecting the disk or drive, wait until it disappears from the
Finder window or your desktop before you remove it from your Mac .
