If you selected cancel, then the file should still be open. If you had selected delete, then the file would be closed and not saved.

Try pressing CMD plus tab, and see if TextEdit is still running. If it is, then as Robert suggested, press CMD plus accent, and this should bring the file you were working on into focus.

You are right, - Brad, I was under this false assumption that mac saves automatically. Mac gave me the option to save it but I thought that since I am not closing it, I did not save and selected cancel.

I have been using Text Edit for years, and am not aware of any “auto-save” feature in this application.

Perhaps you are confusing Text Edit with some other application. Perhaps Google Docs, or something else.
