For me that isn’t the case. When using my Mac lets say I am streaming some music yes the Hotspot stays active. However, if I lets say download a 30 minute radio program once I listen to that and go back to try and use data from my Mac connected to my hotspot its disconnected and I have to reestablish connecting to the hotspot on my Mac. It is easier since as you mentioned you have the Apple tie in, but its annoying none the less.
