Hello,
I use an iPhone 15 Pro running IOS 26.1. I do a daily exercise walk using a
talking navigation app on my iPhone, usually nearby explorer online. I use
Phonak hearing aids which connect to my iPhone via standard bluetooth. They do
not use made for iPhone protocol. The navigation app speaks to me via the
hearing aids and tells me what compass direction I am walking in, the name and
distance to the next street intersection and so on. I use VoiceOver to start
the navigation app and then turn VoiceOver off. I have the hearing aids set to
the Music app which disables hearing aid noise suppression.

My problem is that sometimes, but not always, speech from the navigation app
decreases the sound of traffic noise in my hearing aids for a short time which
is dangerous when crossing roads, somewhat like audio ducking, though I have
audio ducking off via the rota. As the hearing aids are bluetooth connected to
the iPhone I think that the iPhone can hear the traffic noise via the hearing
aid microphones.
I am puzzled by why this audio ducking is happening, especially as I thought
that audio ducking is only relevant when VoiceOver is active.
I am not sure but the problem does not seem to happen if I set the volume of
the navigation app to the desired level before doing any walking. Subsequently
turning on VoiceOver to adjust anything seems to cause the above audio ducking.
I would appreciate any suggestions on what is happening here. Does audio
ducking only happen when VoiceOver is running? What does the audio ducking
amount mean, if I want minimal ducking should I set the ducking amount to 90%
or to 10%?
Many thanks for any suggestions.
Best regards … Paul Hopewell
