You are all missing some key points here. When you suggest mutimg, that also 
mute every other sound the computer might make, including playng media, email 
alerts, message alerts, notification alerts, etc. There is a solution. It is to 
set up a commander. I’m not sure of the exact way to do this, but you can set 
up a keyboard commander to do just about anything on your Mac in and out of 
voiceover. Turning voiceover on or off or muted the voiceover speech defeats 
the purpose. Paul wants to keep the visual VoiceOver abilities working, but 
just turn off the speech and let every other audio element come through. The 
way to do it is, as I said, set up a commander to mute the voiceover speech 
only, just like the triple finger triple tap on a trackpad would do.
