Huh, muted VoiceOver speech! That’s just not possible using a keyboard shortcut. So enabling it also does not work with keyboard. Here is what may have remotely happened. Your friend had turned trackpad commands on accidentally. Then tapped two times using 3 fingers again as a coincidence . This for sure mutes the VO speech. Do the double tap with 3 fingers again to unmute. Make sure trackpad commands are on. Regards.
