I use both DB and TM for Mac. One is cloud and one is physical. Can never have
too many backups.

Subject: Re: Time Machine back up drive

I decided to go with a samsung one terabyte SSD drive connected by USBC to my
MacBook Pro. It’s no bigger than a deck of cards and isn’t really a paperweight
tether to the MacBook it is Bus powered, small and light, andcan goanywhere I
want to go from room to room and so on. The price is right compared to NAS
storage devices and meets my needs. And of course, I can just unplug it and
re-plug it anytime I need to which I really didn’t know about. Thanks for all
the advice

Yes, but it is not really that bad, if your machines spends 90% of its time in
the same place.

Even when not connected to the time machine disk, your Macintosh will make
hourly snapshots of your hard disk, and then once re-connected to the hard
drive those snapshots will be transferred to the Time Machine disk and then
purged from your hard disk.

So, you can leave your backup disk at home when you go to the coffee shop, and
feel fairly confident that you will be able to review changes over the hours
you were at theshop.

Yes, Phil. There is indeed a contradiction in requiring a wireless
network-capable computer to be tethered to a box for backups. Apple should
build a new device, like Time Capsule, for home use. But they don't, because
cloud revenue is recurring, and local (and therefore more private) disk use is
most certainly not!

But, the device you're looking for is called a Network Attached Storage (NAS).
There are many types on the market; Synology is well-known and has a mostly
accessible UI and apps. Alternatively, if you have another always-on Mac, you
can turn it into a NAS, with disks attached to it, then back up to that Mac
wirelessly from your MacBook. I know you've found a solution now, but that's
the path you want to take if you want local backups and networked convenience.

There's another way to use the cloud, without using it for sync. Instead of
using a folder for your files, you run a backup application like Backblaze or
Arq to copy your files into general cloud storage. This has a recurring cost as
well, but it means you don't have to organise your life around the cloud
provider. It may also, depending on how much you're backing up, be much
cheaper. The files will be strongly encrypted with a password you set, so it
will be private, but it also generally means you can no longer access the data
without using the backup application, and it takes a while to back up and
restore. I wouldn't recommend this unless you're unhappy using sync folders,
because you lose a lot of convenience, but if you're online most days, that's
the other way to get networked convenience.

Sabahattin
