Interesting change in direction. When I got my 2012 Mac, I paid for
Pages and Numbers. I don't recall when but not too long afterwards, both
went free.
Now I wonder what other changes Apple has in mind. One thing they
should do is put TextEdit on iPhone and iPad.

Yup, the iWork apps have been bundled into the "Creative Studio" subscription
and are clearly in the process of being enshittified with upsells as a consequence. For
now you can either ignore the updates, or install them and take advantage of the free
features while being aware of the promoted content (which is usually shown at the top of
the list). Unless you're a very advanced user you should probably be OK.
I'm quite ambivalent about it to be honest; I've never liked the apps very much and have
always felt they were a bit trashy and were mostly intended to promote the platform and
the proper pro version of the apps in the case of Logic and Final Cut, basically Apple's
equivalent to "bloatware". And I'm grateful that macOS comes with the perfectly
serviceable TextEdit for handling rich text documents. But, they are clearly useful,
especially Numbers, and it's sad to see Apple squeezing them for every bit of revenue
they can. Here's to hoping that LibreOffice accessibility continues to get better so we
can have a genuinely free option.
