Pages, Numbers, and Keynote became free with a new Mac purchased with MacOS X 
10.9 Mavericks, in October 2014.
The new and most recent versions include an AI component, similar to MS Office 
with Co-Pilot, which is why there is a subscription charge if you want that 
functionality.
