  have you tried pressing enter on the folder in the dock, that you'd like to 
open?…

  YOu should not only be able to see the items in said folder, but you should 
also be given the option to open the folder in Finder rather than just seeing 
it on the dock. 

  Also, pressing VO shift M will also bring up a menu of other options; open 
should be one of them.
