Or even quicker and easier to get spotlight up, Hit command and space bar, will bring up the spotlightsearch, type in what you want and hit enter, the list will come up pretty much straight away.

This means that you have to hold down the control+option key, and press the m key 3 times, on the last pres, release the control and option key. When using spotlight, just start typing what you are looking for, and press the down arrow key, when you hear a sound, which indicates, that it has finished searching. To remove items from the down, you have to bring up the short cut menu for th eicon in the dock, iwth, control+option+shift+m. Then go to options submen, then press the spacebar on the "remove from dock" option. This should remove from the dock.
