Hi,  I'm no expert, but I think all you have to do is set the genra to 
audiobook in the tags of your mp3 files.  It's not a huge inconvenience.  Oh 
know, it's actually a lot nicer to have to jack around with the file info just 
to get them on your player, but I am about %95 sure that it will actually get 
you there.

I don't think it matters how many files your book is.  Your Ipod should 
recognize each set of files as an audiobook as long as they are all tagged 
properly.  There should be no need to switch formats.
