Hello, all:)
I figured I might as well contribute to this topic, although it seems
pretty exhausted by this point. The only string instruments I play are guitar
and bass guitar. I find that the pads of the fingers, which are used for
Braille reading, are unaffected--even by bass playing, where all the strings
(typically) are wound (rough) and very thick as compared to a standard guitar.
If you placehold with your left hand and read with your right (assuming the
left hand is the fretting hand), then the problem should be reduced even
further. As I previously mentioned, however, I experience no difficulties
whatsoever and I don't need to resort (or even think about) things such as
lotion, etc.
I hope this helps in some way.

Hi Scott and all,
I play guitar, banjo, mandolin, dulcimer and uke. I say all of this because as
you might have guessed I have calluses on my left hand and can read just fine.
My left hand is now more sensitive than my right. I like the idea of the oil on
your hands. SOmeone said it was an old fiddler's trick. I never thought of
that. But fear not, as long as you keep up your braille reading skills you
should be just fine. Happy playing! I tried to play fiddle only once, and it
wasn't pretty smile.
Musically,
Allison
