I made one box for strictly unread messages. it has the appearance (sic) of 
what I am used to. I even have set to newest messages at the top, organized by 
thread and the filter is "unread messages". this solved a lot of headaches. 
frankly, I didn't know mail could do it this way. guess I learned something new 
today.
