Regarding having the hdmi and optical cables connected at the same time, the manual for our surround receiver specifically says that the hdmi cable only carries video not audio, so if you want audio through the surround receiver, you have to connect the digital optical cable. Cery annoying, especially as this was not a cheap home theater in a box set up, and you'd think they'd have the more or less standard set up.
