Hi,
In my opinion, Macs don't get out of date quickly. I think what you read was
making reference to the intel/power PC Macs. In the mid 2000s, Apple switched
processors. So those with the old couldn't upgrade past OSX 10.4. But, I
can't See Apple ditching Intel anytime soon. So long as your Mac has the
system resources to run the latest OS, you will be ok.
Now, you mention a Mac mini? What kind of things will you be looking
to do on your Mac? Web browsing, e-mail, using multi media will be fine. More
than fine on a Mac mini. But, if your going to want to do something more
resource intensive, you might want to just save up the extra $300 or so and get
an entry level macbook pro or iMac in my opinion.
