Ray, Yeah, the documentation is, shall we say, lacking. But, basically, you just set the base RPM, the lower threshold & the higher threshold. The only other setting is a check box that changes the read out & graph from celsius to farenhite. The numbers are kind of frightening.
Anyway, apparently, Apple sets the RPM on the fans kind of low. Setting the base RPM higher determines the speed that the fans spin up to for normal operation. I'm trying 2400 RPM or about 60% of my machines capacity. I read that some people were using 2800 RPM & keeping their machines @ about 52C with no problems. The lower threshold, according to my understanding, is the temp @ which the fans cut in. The higher threshold, again according to my understanding, is the temp @ which the fans go in to after-burner mode. You can really hear them @ this point & their, basically, in panic mode to cool the machine down. This is the point @ which most people think, "oh that's my fan." Actually, the fans are on most of the time & only audible when you put your ear next to the machine. Some one else mentioned that this is only treating the symptoms & that maybe my machine needed to be cleaned. Actually, if that's true, then the laptop's needed to be cleaned since the day it came out of the box. From what I read, Apple really hasn't managed the heat issue in the Intel laptops very well. But, whatever, I'm running @ about the normal ranges for a Windows machine @ this point & I'm a firm believer in FanControler now. Oh yeah, & I don't have to wear flame retardant pants anymore.
