WHile I can't help with Audio Recorder, DropBox is a somewhat special case.  
There was a howto posted not so long ago on Maccessibility about it.  Find that

As for the more general problem, I've rarely if ever encountered it.  I suspect 
that it has a lot to do with apps which, for whatever reason, don't use the 
standard Coco APIs.  A lot of crossplatform programs work this way, for 
instance, using something like SDL to do their GUI rendering, which neither 
VoiceOver nor any other screen reader I know of can parse.

PS: If you've already installed DropBox as per above, you won't see anything to 
let you know its running, other than perhaps an entry in your login items.
