Hi Chris,
The reason you're experiencing this behavior is an artifact of some visual 
fanciness Apple went through to make folder Dock icons appealing.  As of Snow 
Leopard, the thing to do is to hit vo-shift-m on the icon you want to access 
and select List mode, from the two or three possibilities, other including grid 
and automatic.  THis will make the icon into a popup menu, which will include a 
choice to open the item in the Finder among other things.  In Lion, we finally 
have access to the other modes.
