I wasn't using Symantha. I was using Alex all along.

Hey Chris. I've noticed this glitch when I have Samantha as my default voice
for Voice Over. If you don't want to switch to Alex, I find that when you
press control twice as Voice Over is speaking, Adium behaves as it should.
But if you don't want this problem, I'd suggest you use Alex until this
glitch is cleared up. HTH.
